Year
2021
I led the end-to-end design of Jojolo, a mobile app connecting mothers in underserved communities to pediatric care and child development tools. From research to final UI, I crafted a mobile-first experience that balanced empathy with clarity—simplifying appointment booking, vaccination tracking, and educational content. I collaborated closely with engineering to ensure an accessible, culturally resonant product that supported early traction and community adoption.
Context
Looking into a dire and age old problem
Child mortality in Nigeria has been on the increase, and at an alarming rate that is. Over 7 million babies are born without access to adequate healthcare services and professionals. First-time mothers are also uninformed which leads to making poor health decisions to the detriment of their children.
The Neochildcare team has been in existence since 2015, and had already built a community of over 6000+ mothers.
Research insight
Building empathy from research data
The research aimed to understand the needs and frustrations of the target users to adequately connect and understand how to appeal to them.
I ran a series of interviews as my approach to getting the necessary information. I believed using this approach would help me to empathise better with the people I would be interviewing.
I held the interviews over zoom. I sat with doctors and mothers from the Neo Childcare network to better understand their needs.

Timeline
Planning the project’s lifecyle
The plan for the project was for us to design, develop and launch within six weeks. We went from research all the way to launch within that period of time.
PROJECT TIMELINE
Competitive analysis
Understanding The State of The Market
The next step was to research what products our target users currently use to solve the same problem. From my research, Jojolo's direct competitors are Babymigo, Babycenter, and Omomi. These apps cater to the same audience and have similar selling points. The whole point was to understand Jojolo’s competitors' strengths and weaknesses and to find a gap in the market.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
Opportunity gaps
Diving deeper into the problem
We found a USP!
I had a sit down with the team to share my progress, and research insights. We noticed all the apps offered the same service, but we also knew that we had to stand out to offer significant value.
The insight from the competitive analysis made us realize that all the apps listed offered the same service: a forum, a chat, and booking features.
We needed something to give us that “edge” and from a mother’s quote we discovered a feature that would set us apart from the other products in the market.
A RANDOM QUOTE FROM OUR INTERVIEW
How do we balance user and business needs?
From a business perspective, we needed to come up with a revenue model, and came to a conclusion that it was going to would be a hybrid model (both subscription and a pay-as-you-go).
However, we needed an incentive for the mothers so we decided to make the forum feature free, this meant that a user wouldn’t have to log in to use the forum until they decided to utilize other features.
For the doctors, the incentive was to gamify the platform as well as offer a financial incentive to use the platform.
Optimization
Giving The Platform Some Structure, Iteration v2.0
Low Fidelity Wireframes
I created some low-fidelity prototypes to check and test functionality rather than the visual appearance of the product.

An easier way to track your baby’s health
Overview
From a UX perspective, it was crucial to understand the mental load that parents experience, especially concerning their baby's health and development. Streamlining the process of tracking growth and vaccinations is not just about convenience; it's about alleviating stress and promoting peace of mind.
We introduced a comprehensive suite of features tailored specifically for parents to track their baby's development milestones, growth progress, and immunization appointments seamlessly.

OVERVIEW
Adding multiple children
We prioritized user onboarding with a seamless screen for mothers to add their children. This intuitive process allows mothers to input essential information about each child, such as name, date of birth, and gender, creating individual profiles within the app.
By establishing these profiles upfront, mothers can personalize their tracking experience and access tailored insights and recommendations based on each child's unique developmental journey.
This thoughtful approach to user onboarding helps to create a personalized experience, ensuring parents feel supported and empowered in tracking their baby's health and development milestones.

ADDING CHILDREN
Track development milestones
With the milestone tracking feature, parents can effortlessly monitor and record their baby's key developmental milestones, from first smiles to first steps, ensuring they stay informed and prepared for each stage of their child's growth journey.

TRACKING DEVELOPMENT
Track physical growth
The growth tracking feature provides parents with the ability to monitor their baby's physical development, including weight, height, and head circumference, enabling them to track progress over time and identify any potential concerns early on.

TRACKING PHYSICAL GROWTH
Never miss an immunization appointment
The immunization appointment tracking feature simplifies the process of managing and scheduling vaccinations, ensuring parents never miss an important appointment and their baby receives timely immunizations for optimal health and wellbeing.

TRACKING PHYSICAL GROWTH
I spoke with my product manager about making the platform gamified to drive user engagement by improving the app experience.
Gamification
Driving motivation and building trust through gamification
Mothers and Doctors get to earn badges according to their level of engagement.
There are three types of badges Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
For a Doctor, gamification and earnings serve as the major drivers of motivation.
For mothers, the experience helps to build trust. A medical professional having a badge serves as a second layer of trust asides their certification.
